Born in Bavaria, Germany, he came with his family to the USA at a young age, and was living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1860. Occupation- jeweler. He enlisted in the US Army April 18, 1861, fighting for the Union in Company E, 2nd Regiment, US Artillery. He was discharged April 18, 1864. He married Bertha Heeren and they had two sons, Theodor and William, before his early death in 1871.

Note- he was known as Charles as well as Karl or Carl.
