Katharine "Katie" Billman Anthony, 73, of Amarillo died Monday, Sept. 19, 2011.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount Blvd., with Don Weemes, pastor of Victory Church, officiating. Burial will be at Llano Cemetery following the service.
Katie was born Feb. 18, 1938, in Evanston, Ill., to Katharine and Charles Billman. She had a brother, Chuck, three years her senior. Due to the second World War the Billmans moved from Evanston to Dallas, then to Chicago and finally settled in Dayton, Ohio, her father's hometown.
Due to a long illness, Katie spent much of her early childhood drawing and painting. Encouraged by her fourth-grade teacher, she began her formal art training at the age of 9 by attending the Dayton Art Institute for children. Soon she became known for her artistic ability and was filling requests from teachers and other students for portraits of their pets.
In high school she was more occupied with studying and socializing than art. She was secretary of the student counsel, coeditor of the yearbook and a member of the education honor society. Her "A" average was rewarded with an academic scholarship to Denison University in Granville, Ohio, where she majored in English literature and pledged Delta Delta Delta sorority.
Upon graduation, she married classmate and best friend William A. Anthony, from Cleveland, Ohio. He attended Baylor Medical School while she taught senior English at Spring Branch High School. Katie and Bill started a family during his residency at Parkland Hospital in Dallas. Robert was born May 27, 1964, and Dawn on June 16, 1968.
Katie and family moved to Amarillo in 1970 where she remained until her passing. While in Amarillo Katie was involved with the Junior League of Amarillo, spent many Christmas Eves with youth at Boys Ranch, volunteered with various schools helping out challenged youths, and raised her two children to adulthood. When Robert moved away from home she took that opportunity to turn his room into a new art studio, where she resumed her childhood passion of painting.
Katie loved to paint all things in bright acrylic colors, most notably the scenes of Santa Fe, N.M., and Taos, N.M. In the summer of 2010 she launched her website, Katieskats.com, a passion turned reality that featured a gallery of her paintings she had done over the years but her newest collection "The eyes have it" paintings numerous cats that she also turned into note cards that are featured on the website. Her last focus was to have her business featured in Cat Fancy Magazine, which was released the day she passed.
Katie was a season ticket holder and loved to attend plays at the Amarillo Little Theater with her grandson, Alex, and truth be told we think he got more out of it than she did.
She was a librarian in the reference department at the downtown library for more than 20 years.
Katie was preceded in death by her mother, Katharine Billman; her father, Charles Billman; and a nephew, Gary Billman.
Survivors include a brother, Chuck Billman and wife Pat of Florida; a son, Robert Anthony of Amarillo; a daughter, Dawn Burns and husband Chris of Colorado Springs, Colo.; five grandchildren, Amber, Alex, Meagan, Sarah, and Nick; and two great-grandchildren, Tristan and Keagan.
Katie wore many different hats throughout her lifetime, wore them well, loved all unconditionally, and always taught by example. You will be missed, but never forgotten.
Visitation will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
