Roman Catholic Pope. He was born Ottobuono de Fieschi probably around 1215. He rose quickly in the church, being appointed a papal chaplain in 1243 and by 1251, he was raised to Cardinal Deacon by his uncle, Pope Innocent IV. In 1265, he arrived in England at the behest of Pope Clement IV to encourage peace between King Henry III and his barons and to raise support for the crusades. He also had an family relationship to Henry through his sister's marriage to the King's cousin. Remaining for three years, he served as papal legate and published what became the basis of church law in England up to the Protestant Reformation. Elected pope on July 11, 1276, he died a month later without being ordained. He was the third pope in the year that became known as the "Year of Four Popes." He is known both as Pope Adrian V and Pope Hadrian V. He is also a character in Dante's "Divine Comedy." However, scholars believe the vices Dante attributes to Hadrian stem from a misinterpretation of another author's work and do not truly represent his disposition or character.
