Obituary - The Western Wave, July 1, 1926
Auguste Elizabeth Henke, nee Butt, was born on the 16th day of May, in the year 1870, in Fuerstensee, Province Pommern, Germany. She was the third youngest child of Mr. Carl Butt and his wife, Caroline, in the old country she was baptized and later confirmed and grew up to young womanhood. In the spring of 1891 she came to America and came to the neighborhood of Western [NE]. On the 28th day of September the same year, 1891, she became the happy wife of Carl Henke of near Tobias [NE], the ceremony being performed by Rev. J. Steinhart of St. John church. This union was blessed with nine children, five sons and four
daughters, of which one child a boy, died in infancy.
To her husband, Mrs. Henke was a devoted helpmate, to her children, a faithful mother and to her fellowmen a kind friend. She loved the House of God and the place where His glory dwelleth. She was also a faithful member of our Ladies Aid Society. She had been a suffering for sometime, but no one realized the gravity of her condition. Three weeks ago she became seriously ill and on June 8 was taken to a hospital in Lincoln [NE] where she submitted to an operation.
At first she seemed to improve and hope for her recovery was entertained. A second operation became necessary on Tuesday morning, June 22, but her weakened body was unable to endure. She passed away peacefully on Thursday morning at 7:30 at the age of 56 years, 1 month and 6 days. Her departure is deeply mourned by her grief-stricken husband, Mr. Karl Henke, eight children: Mrs. Ed Wahl of Western, Mrs. Wm Schwan of Daykin [NE], Mrs. Ed Hinzman of Western, Mrs. Ed Brt of Western, Emil Henke of Daykin, Arthur, Frederick and Carl Henke at home near Tobias: 14 grandchildren; 4 brothers, Frank Butt of Western, Ludwig
Butt of Western, August Butt of Central City [NE], Wm Butt of Elgin IL; two sisters, Mrs. Johanna Arndt of Stettin and Mrs. Caroline Freuer in Stargat, Pommern, Germany, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Sunday, June 27, at 2 o'clock at the St. John Evangelical Church, the pastor, Rev. W. Dickman, officiating.
The church auditorium was filled to capacity and nearly 200 people were unable to gain admittance.
Interment was made in Plainview Cemetery where the mortal body is awaiting the great day of Resurrection.
(The Butt family departed from Stettin Germany on the ship Polynesia and arrived in New York, April 27, 1891. Carl Bull (Butt)age 55; Caroline [Jordon] age 52;
August age 18, Wilhelm age 16; Auguste age 20.)
