Mr. Wm. Snyder Gamber died June 3, 1916, at Gamber, aged 86 years, 10
months and 9 days, and was born July 25, 1829, at East Hempfield Township,
Lancaster county, Pa. and was a son of the late Jacob H.. and Elizabeth
Gamber. He attended various schools at East Hempfield and when fourteen
years of age was taken into his father's store a, bookkeeper, at Columbia, Pa.
He later purchased an interest in his father's business (candy manufacturing)
and moved the business to Lancaster, then sold out with the intention of
moving to Mobile, Ala., but finding Mobile in the grip of it fever epidemic, he
again returned to his native state, where on February 8th, I848 he was
married to Elizabeth Beckel. In 1851, he moved to Carroll county, Md., and
engaged in farming and later taught school at Sandymount. His wife died
in 1853, and a year later he married Anne Maria Haines, of this county, and
taught school at various places in this county. He was sexton at Providence
M. P. Church for a period of 31 years and also conducted a grocery store
during the most of that time. He was appointed postmaster at Gamber by
Postmaster General Timothy 0. Howe on December 7th, 1881, and served in that
office fifteen years, the postoffice being discontinued December 19, 1899. He
was also magistrate during most of that time. In 1903 he moved to Baltimore
county and engaged in farming and also conducted a small grocery
store. In 1906, he again moved back to Gamber, so named in his honor, and
there purchased a small place where he ended his days in peace, being a
devoted reader of the Bible and a firm believer in Christ's teachings.
He is survived by his wife, Anna Maria Gamber, two sisters, Carrie Crutchfield of Alton,
Kansas, and Elizabeth Williams, of Sweetwater, Texas; one brother
Reuben S. Gamber of Lancaster, Pa., also the following sons and daughters:
Albert F., Reuben C., Levi E., and lda Willis of this county; Jacob G., Geo.
W., Robert T., Anise V. Barnes and Mary R. Warehime of Baltimore, and
Emily L. Elliott of Lancaster, Pa., and Wm. L. Gamber of Baltimore county.
He is also survived by fifty-two grandchildren, eighty four great-grandchildren
and six great-great-grandchildren, making a total of one
hundred and fifty-three descendents, six of whom are of the fifth generation.
Funeral services conducted by the Rev. Carroll Maddox were held at
Providence M. P. Church on Tuesday, June 6th at 3 P. M.
Interment in adjoining cemetery. The floral offerings were numerous and beautiful.
The pallbearers were: Thomas J. Miller, George T. Gorsuch, William N. Shauck,
H. Clinton Shipley, Jabez N. Barnes and Levi Barnes. F. C. Sharrer, funeral director.
