Charley H. Smith, 68, died at 6:15 a.m. today at his home 1615 Louisiana after a heart attack. City fireman making a call with their resuscitator at 6:31 a.m. failed to revive him.
A resident of Grady County 40 years, Smith lived in Verden five years where he served as town marshal. He had been connected with the county's sheriff's department 35 years and also worked as a gunsmith and blacksmith. He retired six years ago.
Smith was born March 12, 1893 in Indian Territory. He was a member of the North Side Church of Christ.
Smith is survived by his wife, Mrs. Minnie Smith; six sons, Wesley Lee Smith, Portales, NM, Carl F. Smith, Sacramento, CA., W.D. Smith, Chickasha, Floyd Smith, Aleta, AL., Monroe Smith, Oklahoma City and Thildon L. Smith, Muskogee; two daughters, Mrs. Lucy Mae Ferguson, Jones and Mrs. Mary Lou Hopper, Chickasha and 24 grandchildren.
