He started his career in baseball playing second base with the House of David baseball team from 1934-37, when he signed with the Boston Red Sox. He played second base in the minor leagues before becoming a manager from 1946-1966. In 1967 he was named third-base coach for the Boston Red Sox major league team and served for a brief time as interim manager until 1975. He then became coordinator/manager/special instructor for the Red Sox in the Florida Instructional League.
