Sayreville - Former Mayor Anthony J. Popwski, 72, of North Edward Street died yesterday at South Amboy Memorial Hospital.
A borough native, Mr. Popowski had served as a councilman from 1939 to 1951. He was elected mayor in 1951 and served until 1961. In 1959, he was appointed executive director of the Middlesex County Utilities Authority, a post he held until 1979.
He had been employed in the Photo Finishing Division of E.I. DuPont Co. for 25 years, before retiring in 1959.
He was a board member of Heritage Bank North, East Brunswick, and the American Metropolitan Sewerage Association.
Mr. Popowski was a communicant of St. Stanislaus R.C. Church, and was a member of Knights of Columbus, Council 2061, and the St. Joseph Society.
Surviving are his wife, Cecelia Kwiatkowski Popowski; a son, Fred of Holmdel; a daughter, Barbara Cross of South Amboy; three brothers, Frank, Edward and Bernard, all of Sayerville; a sister, Sophie Golaszewski of Sayerville, and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday from the Maliszewski Memorial Home, 121-123 Main St., followed by a 9 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Stanislaus Church.
Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.
