Thomas Lue Spiva Sr. Abingdon, Va. Thomas Lue Spiva Sr., age 85, went to be with the Lord, Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009, at Valley Health Care in Chilhowie, Washington County, Virginia. He was born March 17, 1924, in Washington County, Virginia, son of the late Thomas Ira Spiva and Mary Widener Spiva. He lived in the Abingdon area his entire life. He held many jobs during his lifetime including being a handyman and caregiver for Brent Remsburg. He was a former employee of Campbell Funeral Home and retired from the Town of Abingdon after 20 years of service. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Abingdon. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Frances Metts Spiva; one son, Thomas Lue Spiva Jr.; and seven brothers and sisters. Survivors include his loving wife of 48 years, Susan Otey Spiva; two sons, Charles Joseph Spiva and Richard Wayne Spiva and wife Peggy; two daughters, Mary Spiva Keohane and fiance‚ Robert Delozier and Virginia Powers and husband Paul; three step-daughters, Mary Doss and Brenda Leutbecher and special son-in-law, Allen Leutbecher, and Patricia Metts Worley; daughter-in-law, Geraldine Spiva; a very special nephew, June Spiva; and his hunting and fishing buddy, Jim Moore; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Thomas Lue Spiva will be conducted Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009, at 8 p.m. in the Frost Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Darryl Fritts officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 p.m. until the time of the funeral service. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009, at Mt. View United Methodist Church Cemetery on Route 75. The funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 10:40 a.m. going to the cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mike Maiden, Brian Spiva, Sammie Lue Spiva, Dewey Wayne Spiva, Thomas Ira Spiva and Adrian Vicars. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Doss, Allen Leutbecher, Michael Keohane, Rick Goodson, and employees and former employees of the Town of Abingdon. The family would like to extend special thanks to the 2nd floor staff of Valley Health Care and Hospice of Southwest Virginia.
