Word was received in Butte yesterday of the death at Los Angeles of John Smith, an old-time resident of Butte and formerly on the sheriff's staff under Tom Dristol. Mr. Smith left here two weeks ago for the coast.
During his long residence here Mr. Smith had been foreman of the North Butte properties and in latter years had been located in Philipsburg. He was widely known and news of his death was received with regret.
Surviving relatives are his widow, Mrs. Julia Smith; four sons, Dr. E. J. Smith, St. Louis, Dr. Jerome and Dr. Malborn Smith, Boseman, and Sidney Smith, a student at Mt. St. Charles college; and a daughter, Audrey.
The body will be brought to Butte for burial and is expected to arrive here this morning. It will be taken to the Daly-Shea mortuary pending funeral arrangements. (Montana Standard, Wednesday 18 Dec 1929)

The body of John C. Smith, former undersheriff of Silver Bow county, who died at Los Angeles Monday, arrived here yesterday morning and was taken to the Daly-Shea mortuary. The funeral will be conducted Monday morning. Solemn requiem high mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick's church by the Rev. Father O'Melley of Philipsburg, assisted by the Rev. Father Rooney of Helena and the Rev. Father Venus of Butte. Burial will be in the family plot in Holy Cross cemetery. (Montana Standard, Thursday 19 December 1929)
