Salt Lake Tribune, The (UT) - December 14, 1997. Deceased Name: Wayne Anderson. Wayne Anderson, our beloved dad and "grandpa," passed away on Thursday, December 11, 1997 of causes incident to age and pneumonia. He was born November 21, 1901 in Huntsville, Utah, the son of Peter Albert Anderson and Mary Jane Langlois Anderson. In the fall of 1921, he went to New York City, where he became a devoted Yankees fan. He attended NYU at night while working for the Swift Company during the day. He was befriended by a company auditor whose son, Hoyt Waited, pitched for the Yankees against the New York Giants in the World Series. Grandpa accompanied the elder Waite to the games and personally met Hoyt Waite, Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, and 22 other famous players. He was given the game ball signed by every player. This was one of his most memorable experiences.

On July 5, 1925, he married Hanna Va Lora Monson in the Salt Lake Temple. They are the parents of one son, John W. (Jack) Anderson (deceased 1973) and a daughter, Carol Anderson Cummings (Boyd). Va Lora passed away in June of 1984. Grandpa lovingly cared for her during her 11 year illness.

After graduation from NYU, Wayne worked for a number of companies in the food/confectioners business. In the early 1930's, he went to Washington DC, to work for a boyhood friend, Bill Marriott Sr., and for 10 years managed the Marriott Hot Shoppes. He and Va Lora returned to Salt Lake City in 1947, where they founded Va Lora Candy Company which they owned for over 20 years. Grandpa was a superb fisherman and spent many of his happiest hours fishing, golfing and playing Old Maid and Monopoly with his grandchildren, he was an avid BYU fan and attended several of the Cougar's bowl games. Wayne was a devoted member of the LDS Church and held many ward and stake positions. In 1967, he and his wife were called to serve as counselors to the president of the Alaska/Canadian Mission, where their responsibilities included the entire state of Alaska.

He is survived by his daughter, Carol; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Edna Anderson-Taylor (Jerald); seven grandchildren: John W. Anderson, Jr. (Susie); Julie Anderson Peterson (Craig); Carrie Cummings Whitley (Jim); Christie Cummings Kelly (Mickey); Drew Cummings (Sue); Dean Cummings and Cece Cummings. He is survived by 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Lowell Anderson (Barbara) of California; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Helen (Wendyl) Anderson and many nieces and nephews. Seven brothers and sisters predeceased him. Grandpa is also survived by his "sweetheart", neighbor and good friend of nine years, Pat Horsley, whose companionship and caring ways made his last years happier. We are deeply grateful that this beautiful lady came into his life. Funeral services will be held at noon on Monday, December 15, 1997 at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, where friends may call from 10:30 a.m. until noon prior to the service. Interment, Larkin Sunset Gardens, 10600 South 1700 East, Sandy, Utah.
