St Charles, IL / Mineral Point - Merton O. Baker, age 95, formerly of Mineral Point, passed away on Monday, September 12, 2011 in St. Charles, IL where he and his wife Alice moved six years ago to be closer to their children.

He was born December 29, 1915 in the town of Springdale, WI to the late Orrin and Mary Lee Baker. At the age of six he moved to Mt. Horeb, WI where he attended elementary and high school.

In 1937, Merton moved to Mineral Point, WI where he worked for the Wisconsin Power & Light Company for 46 years and met and married Alice H. Ridley on September 6, 1947. He started with WP&L as a cashier and bookkeeper and held positions of Engineering Clerk and Commercial Sales Representative, and Commercial & Industrial Representative – Consumer Services before retiring May 1, 1984.

Merton was an active member of the community and participated in many organizations. He served on the Mineral Point School Board, was a past president of the Kiwanis Club, a past master of Mineral Point Lodge #1, F&AM, and Treasurer of the Iowa County Fair Association. He was a member of the United Congregational Church, a past president of the Church Council and served 12 years as superintendent of the Sunday School.

In retirement he enjoyed doing projects around the house, playing golf (getting a hole-in-one on the 9th hole at Dodge-Point Country Club), walking his beloved Josie, and spending time with family and friends. He deeply loved his family, faith, friends and community.

Merton was the loving spouse of Alice for 64 years, devoted father of Ann, Bill, and Brian and proud grandfather of Whitney Baker and Jessica Baker. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, three sisters, and two daughters-in-law.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2011 at 12:00 p.m. at the CONGREGATIONAL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST in Mineral Point. Pastor Beryl Melcher will officiate. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at the church.
