John immigrated to the United States with his brother William in 1836 as a leather merchant. He was married to Elizabeth Salisbury Norman on Jun 9 1837 at 7th Presbyterian Church in New York by Rev Hatfield. He returned to Scotland where he & his wife & daughter Isabelle lived in Aberdeen in 1841. The family returned to Hinckley, Medina, Ohio, abt 1844. He was a successful farmer in Hinckley until about 1880 when he sold part of the farm and moved with 3 of his children to Scranton Road, Cleveland.

He probably died at his home. He was survived by his wife and 6 children. 2 children predeceased him.
