Wooten was the third of the eleven children of George W. and Zora (Bennett) Freeman.

Wooten attended the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. He served in the US Army in 1918. After the war, he managed Freeman Co. stores in Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Michigan, Mississippi and Tennessee. In the 1930s he established a textile manufacturing business in Tullahoma, Tennessee.

Wooten married Marie Lester on 31 Dec 1921 in Hope, Arkansas. They had three children: Emily Ann Freeman (1923-2008), George Lester Freeman (1928-2013), and Marie Louise Freeman Dodd (1929-2011).
