Aileen Crowder McKinney, 92, died Friday, November 28, 2008, at White Oak Manor, Rutherfordton, where she was resident. A native of Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late William Albert Crowder and Fannie Jones Crowder, and the widow of John Summey " Tobe" McKinney.
She was a charter member of the Pilot Club of Rutherford County and a member of First United Methodist Church, where she was active in the Asbury Sunday School class and United Methodist Women. Mrs. McKinney graduated from Women's College (UNC- Greensboro) in 1937 with a bachelor of science degree in home economics. She began teaching at Hoke High School in 1937; became a home supervisor with the Farm Security Administration (FSA) in 1939 until June of 1944, when she became the dietitian for Shelby Hospital. She later became a home supervisor with FSA in Rutherford County until she founded the First United Methodist Church Kindergarten in Forest City and followed as an elementary and special education teacher with Rutherford County Schools, having retired from East Rutherford High School in 1977.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Taylor of Forest City, and Frances Hawk of Rutherfordton; a sister, Ruth McSwain of Wilmington; three grandsons and a number of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Wesley K. Judy officiating. Visitation will follow the service at the church. A committal service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the Cool Springs Cemetery prior to the memorial service.
