Wilmington, NC - Ruth Crowder McSwain was born on March 18, 1925 in Lattimore, NC, the youngest member of the William Albert Crowder family and, at 96 years of age, was the last remaining of ten siblings. She died on April 13, 2021 in Wilmington, NC. Ruth was a graduate of Lattimore High School and of Womans College, now UNC-Greensboro. She later earned a Masters in Guidance and Counseling from UNC-Charlotte.

A friend and neighbor, Clyde Z. McSwain, Jr. returned home from WW II and became her husband on August 10, 1946. They moved to NC State University "Vetville" and became lifelong Wolfpackers, celebrating 50 years of marriage just prior to his death in November, 1996. Ruth met the challenges of widowhood with extensive travel, bridge clubs, church activities, a growing family, and wonderful friends and neighbors. Their children and survivors are Clyde III "Butch" (Linda), John Roger (Kay), Michael (Lue Anne), and Patrick (Sharon); grandchildren Kerri McSwain-Bishop (Jason), Kevin (Rebecca), Derek, Bryn (Meredith); great-grandchildren Connor (Brooke) and Laney Bishop, Sarah, Brody, Brooke, Beau, Bennett, Avery, and Maggie McSwain, and Zachary and Haley Soles. She is also survived by many much beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins in Cleveland County, NC and beyond.

Throughout her life, she volunteered time and effort to schools and community organizations including twelve years as a 4-H leader, president of four local PTAs, president of NC School Counselors' Association, board member of the American School Counselors' Association, and served on the UNC-G Alumni Board. Ruth McSwain touched many lives and made a difference in every community in which she lived. She cherished each and every friend, co-worker, educator, and student she met throughout her career and all remained part of her extended family.

She had a large and loving church family at Carolina Beach Presbyterian Church and dear friends at Harbor Oaks and Holly Tree neighborhoods. For the last four years, she called Trinity Grove "my home" and truly loved the staff and caregivers and thrived in their nurturing community.

In compliance, and with concern for the health and safety of all loved ones, a small graveside service is planned on Tuesday, April 20, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at Oleander Memorial Gardens in Wilmington, NC. Masks and distancing are required. Although our farewell must be brief under current circumstances, our love is immense and she will live forever in our hearts.
