Information from pp. 271-273 of _Otsego, In the Beginning, 1854-1880_:
Civil War Veteran. Born in Maine, son of Ephraim and Belinda Spencer, he married 1) Ellen Lisson and 2) Josephine Lacard. He drowned along with son Freeman on 22 April 1896.

In addition to the siblings linked below, Martin Spencer had a sister named Climena Spencer McDonald (1843-1932). His [second] wife's name was Josephine LaSarte, not Lacard, and their four mutual children were Freeman Spencer (1882-1896), Mary Jane Spencer Baker (1884-1966, Laura Spencer (1886-?), and Leonie Spencer (Aug 23, 1888-Oct 29, 1908.)

Federal Veteran pension card - Martin E. Spencer applied for disability pension Nov. 8. 1880 in Minn.. Widow Josephine applied for widows pension May 6, 1896 in Minn. Her file will have proof of marriage and both dates & places of death."
