Marcella Edna Ohnemus, 97, of Brackett (Fall Creek) died on Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at Oakwood Villa in Altoona.
Marcella was born on August 21, 1918 in Forest City, Iowa. She was the youngest child of George and Eda (Flemmig) Winterton. She grew up farming in north central Iowa. Marcella worked as a housekeeper and cook. She moved to Eau Claire in 1940. She met Mervin Ohnemus at the Stein Farm and they were later married on November 18, 1941 at St. Patrick Church in Eau Claire. During WWII Marcella lived with her husband in Milwaukee until moving to Withee, WI. Together, they moved to Brackett, WI in 1952 where she lived the rest of her life. She helped operate a gas station in Brackett from 1952 to 1989. She was an avid gardener of flowers and also helped grow, harvest, and sell asparagus at her home. Marcella made a variety of cookies and homemade bread for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Marcella is survived by her children, Merrill (Carole) Ohnemus of Brackett, Carol Christian of Torrington, CT, and Donald and Daniel Ohnemus of Brackett; five grandchildren, Vicki (Andy) Foote of Eau Claire, Joe Ohnemus of Eau Claire, Julia (Robert) DeLayo of Warren, CT, Eric Christian of Las Vegas, NV, and Dr. Matthew (Sarah) Christian of Chillicothe, OH; five great-grandchildren, Rosalyn Foote, Michael DeLayo, Lauren Christian, William Christian, and Carter Ohnemus; as well as sisters-in-law Ethel Hayden of Eau Claire and Elaine Hansen of Greenwood, WI; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Marcella was preceded in death by her husband, Mervin Ohnemus; daughter, Jean; and brothers, Alvie, Wilbur, Earl, and Mearle; sisters, Mayme Lovik, Georgina Winterton, Vernice Wetzel, Esther Watton, and Laura Mostek.
Funeral services will be Monday, May 23, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Raymond Church in Fall Creek. Visitation will be Sunday, May 22, 2016 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Smith Funeral Chapel and one hour prior to the services at the church on Monday. Burial will follow the service at Holy Guardian Angels Cemetery. Friends and family may leave online condolences at http://www.smithfuneralec.com.
