Clendenin Boggs was the son of LeMasters Martin Boggs. His first name comes from the name of his great-grandmother, Mary Clendenin, who married Charles Francis Boggs. He is with his parents in the 1850 us census record, living in Monroe County, IA.

He was born in Braxton County, VA, a part of VA that became part of WV in the 1860s. In about 1838, when he was 11, his family relocated to Van Buren County, IA.

He married Margaret Ramsey (possibly "Ramsay") in 1853 in Albia, Monroe, IA. They had three sons: Henry Clay Boggs (1854-1925); William E. Boggs (1862-??); and Newton E. Boggs (1867-1941). Their son, William, went on a voyage in the 1880s and was never seen again.

Clendenin and Margaret moved to Beattie, Marshall, KS in 1904 and made their home with their son, Henry, until 1911, when they moved to Denver to reside with their son, Newton.
