Margaret June Bonges Manning, 101, beloved sister, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully at her home, the Mather, in Evanston, on Aug. 31, 2011.
Lovingly known as Cookie, first by her family for her baking, and then by all who knew her, Margaret was born June 29, 1910, in Hennepin to John E. and Ellen Cahill Bonges.
She graduated from Hennepin Township High School at the age of 15. Then she attended La Salle-Pe-ru-Ogle-sby Junior College and the University of Illinois. After college, she returned to Hennepin and taught school for seven years in a one-room schoolhouse with grades 1-8.
In 1937, Margaret married Martin Arthur Manning of Ladd, where the couple settled, raised four children, and where she resided for 58 years.
She was active in Hennepin Garden Club, Bureau County Home Bureau, St. Benedict's Alter and Rosary Society, Catholic Daughters of America in La Salle and also was a member of American Cancer Society. She was most remembered for bringing her extended family together for annual Christmas parties, her ornate handmade Christmas ornaments, making awesome hand-knit slippers and nightly cocktails. Every year for Easter, she made nests with her children's pajamas and put Easter baskets filled with candy in each nest. This is now a tradition that has been handed down for generations.
Martin preceded her in death in 1970.
She is survived by her sister Kathryn May Reutcke; her ister-in-law Corrine Manning and her four children Kathy (Walter) Clements, Mary Ellen (Jim) Mini, Margaret Ann (John) Jacoby and Martin (Florence) Manning. She is survived by 15 grandchildren, John Mini, Cathy Hetrick, Michele Dalmaso, Colleen Emery, Lisa Dalton, Maria Weise, Suzanne Cirulis, Sarah Curry, Matt Jacoby, Mary Ann Rhuberg, Walter Clements, Amy Clements (Carrie Beitlich), Stephanie (Dan) Janiszewski, Stacy (JR) Howard, and Martin (Kristin) Manning; 29 great-grandchildren: Theo Beitlich-Clements; Lauren, Matt and Allison Hetrick; Danny, Dominic, David and Dante Dalmaso; Ellen, Jack, and Sarah Emery; Maggie, Katie and Jimmy Dalton; Jessica, Brad and Emily Weise; Addie, Bea and George Cirulis; Emma, Grace, John and Tabitha Curry; Danny, Jack, and Luke Janiszewski; Donovan Manning; and Lila Howard.
A funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in St Bede Abbey with the Rev. Ronald Margherio, O.S.B., officiating.
Internment will immediately follow at Valley Memorial Park.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday in Hurst Funeral Home, Ladd. Additional visitation will be 10-10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Bede Abbey.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to St. Bede Academy.
