Mason City, Iowa – Richard L. Calvert, age 59, of Mason City, died Saturday (Sept. 11, 2010) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services for Rick will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, at First Christian Church, 318 N. Adams Ave., Mason City, with Pastor Glen Bandel officiating.

Internment will be held at a private family gathering. Friends and family may attend the visitation 5-7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 13, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City.

Richard Leonard Calvert was born Jan. 10, 1951, in Mason City, to Leonard "Jack" and Blanche (Bartusek) Calvert. He was the youngest of five children.

Rick grew up in Rock Falls and after graduating from Rock Falls High School in 1969, he began work as a sheet metal fabricator for Comfort, Inc. in Mason City, where he launched a long career of HVAC installation and repair.

He married Sue Ellen Roberts, of Rock Falls, Nov. 3, 1972 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church Chapel in Mason City. They moved to Mason City and welcomed son, Travis James, in March 1973 and daughter, Dawn Marie, in February 1977.

In August 1994, Rick's first and only grandchild, Casey Lynn was welcomed into the family.

Rick enjoyed demolition derbies, car racing, car shows, spending time with his wife, son, daughter and granddaughter and vacationing around the world. He and his wife traveled to Jamaica, Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii and other ports of call.

Rick worked for Secory Bonded Plumbing and Heating for more than 20 years and owned Bonded Plumbing and Heating in Clear Lake for more than two years.

He attended First Christian Church, serving as a board member, elder and deacon. He was also a member of the Eagles Club in Mason City.

Rick is survived by his wife, Sue Calvert, of Mason City; son, Travis and his wife Amelia, of Reno, NV; daughter Dawn Schuster and her husband Andy; beloved granddaughter, Casey Lynn Schuster, of Dougherty; two brothers, Ron Calvert and wife Judy, of Nora Springs, and John Calvert and wife Sandy, of Mason City; sister, Sharon Manning and husband Dennis, of Nora Springs; father-in-law, Allen Roberts, of Mason City; sister-in-law, Sally Roberts and friend Terry Radcliff, of Mason City; two brothers-in-law, Steven Roberts and wife Lori, of Boone, Iowa, and Scott Roberts and wife Betty, of Ottumwa; and many nieces and nephews.

Rick was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Gerald "Jerry" Calvert; and mother-in-law, Frieda Roberts.

Memorials may be directed to the Richard L. Calvert Memorial Fund in care of the family.
