Josephine Julia Hornickel Hotzler, daughter of Jacob and Dorothy (Wagner) Hornickel, was born on March 29, 1921 on her parents' farm in LaCrosse Township, Jackson County, Minnesota. Josephine grew up on the family farm and attended Sacred Heart School and later graduated from Heron Lake High School. Following her education, Josephine worked as a hired girl in the area. She married Ralph Hotzler on February 15, 1944 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church Rectory in Heron Lake. Following their marriage, the couple farmed in Alba Township for three years and later in Ewington Township. They retired from farming and continued to live on the farm until moving to Heron Lake in 1989. She entered the Lakeview Nursing Home on October 2, 1996 and had resided there since.

Josephine was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Heron Lake. She enjoyed her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, flowers, gardening, walking, birds and sewing.

Josephine passed away on Tuesday afternoon, May 23, 2006 at the Lakeview Nursing Home in Heron Lake. She was 85 years, 1 month and 24 days old.

Josephine is survived by two sons: Rodger (Ardis) Hotzler of Okabena and Jeffrey (Pat) Hotzler of Heron Lake; four daughters: Margaret (Ken) Hesemann of rural Lakefield, Kathleen Barke of Fairmont, Joanne (Ray) Bartosh of Dundee and Elizabeth (Curt) Privratsky of Stacy, MN; fifteen grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; four sisters: Frederick Dorpinghaus of Heron Lake, Dorothy Tolifson of Benson, Gertrude Knorr of Tampa, FL and Evangeline Simonsen of Marshall.

Josephine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a grandson Westen, a son-in-law Terry Barke and a sister Catherine Minnig.
