Funeral Rites Held For Drake
Mary Lawrence Drake
Resident Here for 45 Years
Funeral services were conducted for Mrs. S. C. Drake Saturday, January 19, 1957, at the First Baptist Church of Groom at 2:00 p.m. The Reverend J. Walter Davis, pastor, officiated and pallbearers were Sam Black, Bob Milton, Arthur Conrad, S. K. Roach, O. P. Blackwell and W. C. Watley.
Interment was in the Groom Cemetery under direction of N. S. Griggs Funeral Home of Amarillo.
Mary Lawrence Drake was born December 22, 1869, at Arcadia, La., and later moved with her parents to what is now known as Collinsville, Tex., Grayson County. She was married to S. C. Drake on August 14, 1901, at Collinsville and the couple went to their new home at Drake, Okla., later moving to Foss, Oklahoma.
Mr. and Mrs. Drake moved to the Groom community on March 3, 1912, first locating five miles southwest of town where they resided for several years before moving to a farm one mile northeast of Groom.
Mrs. Drake who was 87 years of age, was preceded in death by her husband who passed away on March 10, 1952 at their farm home at the age of 89 years. The couple did not have any children.
Mrs. Drake has been in failing health for the past two years. In March, 1956, she went to live with a brother and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. O. E. Dawkins, at Ottawa, Kansas, where she passed away on January 16.
Mrs. Drake was an active member of the Baptist Church here and was a Sunday school teacher for many years. She and her husband helped plan the new church building and gave generously to help pay for its construction.
Surviving relatives include one sister, Mrs. Lula Randles of Turpin, Oklahoma, and three brothers, S. S. Dawkins, Collinsville, Texas, O. E. Dawkins, Ottawa, Kansas, and D. W. Dawkins, St. Louis, Missouri.
Out-of-town relatives here to attend funeral services Saturday included D. W. Dawkins, St. Louis, Missouri, Mr. and Mrs. O. E. Dawkins, Collinsville, Texas, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Dawkins, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Dawkins and family, Claude, Mr. and Mrs. Foy Dawkins and family, Texhoma, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence DeLazier and Miss Willie DeLazier, Foss, Oklahoma, Mr. and Mrs. A. Myers, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Mr. and Mrs. D. L. Miller and family of McLean.
