S. C. DRAKE, 89, DIES
AT HOME MONDAY

Samuel Cusick Drake, 89 years old, died at 12:50 Monday afternoon, March 10, at his home 1 ½ miles north of Groom. His wife, a few relatives and a number of friends were at his bedside when death came.

Mr. Drake, a retired farmer, came to Groom March 3, 1912, first locating five miles southwest of the community, where he resided for five years, after which he moved to his present location.

He was born at Eucebia Melmont County, Tennessee, September 3, 1862. As a young man, he taught school in the Indian Territory, when he first came to Texas.

He was a graduate of Carson Newman College and Harrison Chilhowee College, both of Knoxville, Tennessee.

He was married to Miss Mary Lawrence Dawkins in Collinsville, Texas August 14, 1901. The couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary last year.

Mr. Drake was one of Groom’s most beloved citizens. He was a loyal church worker and united with the Baptist Church at the age of 18 at Prospect, Tennessee. He was most generous with his money and time to his church and religious causes.

He served in the capacity of church school superintendent 32 years and as a deacon approximately 30 years. He was also a teacher of the Intermediate group a few years.

The beautiful Baptist Church of Groom stands as a symbol of his loyalty and generousity (sp), for he and his wife contributed $20,000 to the erection of the building. However, he did not restrict his giving to his community, for he donated $2,000 to Baylor University. There are many other things too numerous to mention for which Samuel C. Drake’s memory will be cherished.

Surviving relatives include his wife, three brothers, A. B. Drake, Bennington, Oklahoma; John Drake, Louisville, Kentucky; and Roy Drake, Knoxville, Tennessee; 14 nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 o’clock Wednesday afternoon in the Groom First Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Lloyd, pastor, officiating. He was assisted by Rev. L. E. Godwin of Panhandle.

Pallbearers wee Leroy Frederiksen, Bill Cornett, Frank Burgin, Billy Burgin, Buck Whatley and Sam Black.

Interment was in Groom Cemetery under the direction of N. S. Griggs & Sons Funeral Home of Amarillo.
