David Sterne and his father Francis G Sterne enlisted same day, same unit, for war. David was killed - father took leave of absence - Francis G Sterne - Absent, without leave on 26 August 1862, court martialed on 18 April 1863 (sound not guilty), and then sentenced on 18 April 1863 (Forfeit 6 mo. pay) Family members believe that the father, Francis G Sterne, took leave at this time to remove his body of his son back to Caroline County for a burial on the family homestead. A Civil War monument was later added by the Daughters of the Confederacy to mark the grave of David Sterne now located in Green Lawn Cemetery Section D, Lots 161 and 162.
