Joseph William Keefe, Sr. was born in Overton, Bradford, PA to Sarah "Sal" Shultz Nichols Nickerson Scrivens
and John Keefe, a son of Daniel Keefe and Bridget Leahy Keefe of Forks, Sullivan, PA. To the best of our knowledge, his parents never married.

Interestingly, there was a two year old named Joseph living in the home of Daniel and Bridget Keefe in the 1880 census out of Forks, Sullivan, PA. His name was Joseph Sullivan and his mother, also living there, was Sarah Shoults [sic]. Was this the same Joseph? Was Joseph's surname really Sullivan?

The same census also noted that Sarah, Joseph's mother, was deaf and mute. She was placed at the expense of the County in the home of Bridget and Daniel Keefe, perhaps to help the elderly couple. Joseph was listed as an orphan supported by the County.

DNA testing has confirmed that Sarah Shultz was indeed his mother. It, along with her death certificate, and census records, have confirmed that Sarah was a daughter of John Shultz and Margaret "Maggie" Van Sickle Shultz Willey. Her parents married in Columbia County, PA but their families migrated there from Sussex County, New Jersey.

As a child, he was primarily raised by Julia Keefe Welsh. At about nine years of age, he set out with his "Uncle" David Keefe, who was known to be a wanderer. This information was provided by Julia Keefe Welsh's granddaughter, Lucille Paladino.

He started as a cook and ultimately became a hotel manager. He married Arminta Catherine Wiley of Bittinger, Garrett County, Maryland. They married on February 11, 1905 in Jennings, Garrett, Maryland at the Jennings Hotel. They had four surviving children: James Cortez Keefe, M. Gleaves Keefe Knecht, Ruth Keefe Grimm, and Joseph William Keefe, Jr.. They also raised their beloved grandson, James.

DNA testing has confirmed several biological relatives descended from Bridget Leahy Keefe's brother, Thomas Leahy, and his wife, Mary Flynn Leahy. It has also confirmed descendants from Sarah Shultz's sister, Charlotte V. Shultz Millard with 99% confidence.

The DNA testing confirmed Joseph's maternal line and focused our research of his family. This research revealed that he had a sister, Mary Keefe Larrabee, previously unknown to us. Her son Ezra Larrabee lived in Elmira,NY likely unaware that his first cousin,
Cort Keefe, lived there as well.

2015 Update: Joseph W. Keefe applied for a social security number in 1943. On his application, he listed and confirmed that his parents were indeed John Keefe and Sarah Shultz and that he was born in Overton, Bradford, PA.
