Robert Henriod Ballard, age 92, passed away on August 28, 2011 due to natural causes in Draper, Utah.

He was born January 19, 1919 to Ross Day Ballard and Ruby Henriod. He was the second oldest of ten children. Robert graduated from Jordan High School in 1936.

He graduated from BYU in 1941 with a B.A. in Chemistry. He met his wife Dorothy Jean Cannon while attending BYU and they were married September 17, 1942. He started attending medical school at the University of Utah in 1941 and was part of the first graduating class of 1944.

From there he took on an internship at Waterbury Hospital in Connecticut which ended in 1945. He was part of the Reserves but once his internship was completed he was stationed at Bushnell General Hospital, working on returning soldiers who were amputees.

He was then stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington and Regensburg, Germany serving in the orthopedics department and serving as District Medical Inspector until 1947. Returning back to Utah he was promoted to Major and was the Regimental Surgeon for the 222nd Field Artillery in the Utah National Guard.

In 1951, he and his family moved to San Bernardino, California and he established his orthopedics practice. In 1960, he was elected Chief of Staff at San Bernardino Community Hospital.

He was active in the development of the rehabilitation center at Community Hospital and became their Medical Director. Once the new center was completed in 1983 they named it the Robert H. Ballard Rehabilitation Hospital. He continued practicing orthopedics until 1993.

He served many years at St. Bernardine Medical Center and in 2001 they named the advanced medical care unit as the Ballard Center after he and his brother Ross, who also served the community as an OB-GYN. He remained in California until October 2003, then returned to Draper, Utah.

In 2007, he formed a scholarship at the University of Utah granting two medical school students each year with scholarships. At this time there have been two graduates and there are eight students.
