Clyde Fortner, age 85, of Blue Ridge, passed away on Wednesday morning, Feb. 8, 2010, at Fannin Regional Hospital.
At the time of his death, Clyde had lived in Blue Ridge for 13 years. He was the building inspector for the city of Blue Ridge. Clyde served in the Army Airborne Division in World War II as a tail gunner and flew many dangerous missions. Upon returning from war, he immediately married the love of his life, Jean, a marriage that has lasted over 60 years.
Clyde built his own business in Atlanta and was responsible for many of the early subdivisions there. He was a builder who believed in doing things right and as a result God prospered his efforts.
Clyde came to faith in Christ at the age of 33, and from that moment on he never lost his passion for sharing the Gospel and for discipling others in the faith. Clyde was a passionate and dedicated student of the Bible and spent his whole life studying and sharing what he learned.
In retirement he returned to school to learn Greek and Hebrew. He was a deacon and founding member of Briarlake Baptist Church in Atlanta, where he taught the Bible for 13 years. He was a deacon at the First Baptist Church of Atlanta, where he and Jean spent 17 years teaching young people in the college dept. there.
After moving to Blue Ridge, he became a deacon at Blue Ridge First Baptist, and served there faithfully in Sunday School, AWANA, and a host of other committees. He was also a founding board member of the Fannin Christian Learning Center. In all he did, his motivation was a love of Christ, a love for His Word, and a love for his fellow man.
Clyde was a world traveler, having visited the Holy Land many times, serving as a tour guide to many of his fellow travelers. He had a love for Great Britain and traveled there many times as well. He loved his books, many of which are rare and no longer in print. He worked hard for six years on the Fannin County Library Board. There were very few subjects that you couldn't discuss with Clyde, as he had spent his whole life soaking up knowledge and loved sharing it.
There is no way to measure the effect the life of Clyde Fortner had on so many who had the privilege of knowing him. His greatest legacy is found in his obedience, his humility, and the many lives he discipled in his daily walk. He was a scholar, a faithful husband, loving father, grandfather, and friend. Most importantly, he was truly a man of God.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years Jean Garner Fortner of the home; daughter and son-in-law Carol F. and Larry F. Creech of Tucker, Ga.; two sisters and one brother-in-law Bobbie and L.D. Barber and Betty Bolton, all of Tucker; grandchildren Christie McMahan of Tucker, Elizabeth Giddens of Loganville, Ga., and Katie Ashcraft of Canton, Ga.; great-grandchildren Eryn McMahan, Wryeton Giddens, Kyler Giddens and Alex Ashcraft.
Funeral services were conducted on Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010, at 11 a.m. from the Blue Ridge First Baptist Church with the Rev. Charlie Howell, the Rev. Victor Morgan and the Rev. David Whitener officiating. Music was provided by Brian Huffman and Lydia Arnall. Interment followed in the Chastain Memorial Park. The senior men's Sunday school class and the discipleship Bible study class of Blue Ridge First Baptist Church served as an honorary escort.
