"Gussie" was born on June 21, 1947 in Cloverport, the daughter of the late Everett Augustine Powers and Eva Mae (Elder) Powers. She was a member of the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. A graduate of Mount St. Joseph Academy and Brescia College, Gussie earned her master's in education from Western Kentucky University. She taught primary grades for the Owensboro Catholic Diocesan Schools for 22 years, serving at St. Stephen's Cathedral, Our Lady of Lourdes and St. Pius Tenth in Owensboro and St. Romuald School in Hardinsburg. After leaving teaching to care for her invalid mother, she worked in security at National Southwire, Century Aluminum, and Aleris.
Gussie was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Verrill S. Powers, Joseph Raphael Powers, Sr., Rev. Benjamin C. Powers and Louis Randolph Powers; and her nephew; Robert G. Powers.
She is survived by one brother, Kenneth Powers (Oneida), Brandenburg, KY; four sisters, Sister Ann Roberta Powers S.C.N., Gaya, India, Mrs. Eulaine Robertson (Eldred Walter), Sister Rose Jean Powers O.S.U., both of Owensboro, and Sister Marian Powers O.S.U of Cloverport; two sisters-in-law, Nora Jean Powers of Hardinsburg and LaVerne Powers of Louisville; and nieces and nephews.
The Mass of Resurrection will be held noon Tuesday CDT at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Cloverport with Father Dan Kreutzer officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call Burns Funeral Home in Cloverport, 3-8 p.m. CDT Monday, with prayers at 7 p.m.
