From the Nashville Journal (IL), Fri., Dec. 11 1863:

DIED WITH HONOR
James E. Downes, 5th Sergeant, Co. E, 10th Missouri Infantry. Killed in battle on the 25th of November, 1863.
Sergeant Downes joined the company at the original organization; was appointed corporal by the vote of the company; served as such faithfully. He was in the battle of Inka, Miss., September 19, 1862 and the battle of Corinth, Miss., October 3rd and 4th, 1862.
He went with the company to Oxford, Miss., in the winter campaign; was sick, but followed us to every point; was in the hazardous Zazoo expedition, in March 1863; was with his regiment and company in the campaign to the rear of Vicksburg; participated in the desperate and hazardous charge upon the enemy at Jackson, Miss., Mar 24, 1863. He participated like a hero in the gall.......... made by the 10th Missouri Infantry at Champion Hills, May 16, 1863; took his part, done it well, for 43 days, during the siege of Vicksburg; was for his gallantry promoted to Sergeant on the 1st of October, 1863. He marched from Glendale, Miss., to Chattanooga, and did all this without a murmur or complaint. He went into battle on the 25th of November, 1863; was shot through the heart, and died.
Mr. Editor, I write the above sketch as a just debt to the brave who once lived, but now is dead. I am glad I am permitted to say that Sergeant James E. Downes was not only a faithful and brave soldier, but a man of refined intellect and a high sense of honor. And well may every friend of our country mourn the loss. Yet, while Downes is dead, there are many others who have died like him---for their country; and yet the wicked traitor will rejoice. I will pay for the benefit of the rebels at home, who can say "no less" to the death of a man in the Federal army, that they are bloody murderers at heart and deserve a traitors doom.
Lieut. Commander, Co. E, 10th Missouri Infantry
