William Shaffer died sometime between 1891 to 1899 while working on the railroad in Grafton, West Virginia. Shortly after his death Mary moved to Oakland, Maryland and she obtained a job working as a cook in a hotel. The 1900 census shows she left her two daughters, Permelia, age 11, and Dessie, age 8, behind in West Virginia and put them to work as servants in two separate homes.
Mary met second husband George Edward Purnell while working at the hotel in Maryland. They were married sometime between 1900 to 1901 in Oakland and she had six children from this union: Lewis Alender; Dorsey E.; Lisa Beulah; Jasper R.; Lottie; Nellie C.
Mary died from liver and gall bladder cancer.
