Delbert E. Box, 60, Valliant, died Tuesday at his home.
Born March 10, 1923 at Wright City, he had been a resident of Valliant since 1978, moving from Ontario, Cal., where he had worked as a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of the American Legion and the Baptist Church.
A veteran of service with the U.S. Navy in World War II, he was engaged in eight major battles as a Fireman 1st Class aboard the USS Coos Bay and the USS Tingly DD.
He was awarded a Bronze Star for his efforts in saving survivors of the USS Franklin from icy waters on March 19, 1945. He also served with the US Army from 1949 until 1952.
Survivors include one son, Sgt. Wayne Box of Frankfurt, Germany; one step-daughter, Betty Grant of California; his mother, Irma Box of Valliant; two sisters, Mildred Hancox of Phoenix, Ariz. and Pat Julian of Valliant; one brother, Dewey B. Box of Valliant; and one granddaughter, Bianca Box of Frankfurt.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at the Felker Freewill Baptist Church, north of Valliant, with the Rev. T.C. Burkett, assisted by the Rev. Bill Haddox, officiating.
Arrangements and burial in the Valliant Cemetery are under the direction of Nation Funeral Home of Broken Bow.
