Helena "Lena" Smith was born in 1876 in Minnesota. The Smith family lived in Spring Hill, Stearns County, Minn. Her father was a civil war engineer and after the death of his wife & mother of his 5 children, Lena's father sent her to an Aunt's home in Chicago so she could attend a catholic school. Her father and 4 brothers moved to Peone, Spokane County, Wash. In 1886, Lena joined her father & brothers in Wash.
When Lena Smith was 18 years old, she married the 23 year old Michael Schoenberg on November 30, 1893 in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spokane Falls, Wash. Fr. Barnabas Held, OSB officiated the marriage ceremony.
Mike & Lena Schoenberg had four children:
- George 1895-1897
- Edward 1898
- Verna 1904
- Margaret 1914
Michael Schoenberg died on March 29, 1957 at the age of 87 years. The funeral mass was in St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Hillyard, Spokane County, Wash and burial was in Holy Cross Cemetery, Spokane County, Wash.
Nine weeks after the death of her husband, Lena Smith Schoenberg passed away on June 7, 1957 at the age of 82 years. Lena is buried next to her husband in Holy Cross Cemetery.
