Minnie was born December 24, 1890 on a small farm seven miles west of Alexandria. She was the daughter of Andrew and Karen (Anderson) Jacobson. She was one of twelve children, six brothers and five sisters. Mina was the nickname her mother gave her. Almina attended grade school in Lake Mary Township but had to quit school at the age of eleven because of her mother's death. The family moved to Columbus, North Dakota and Mina helped take care of the younger children and do the house chores. She also worked for a family as a housekeeper and later at their restaurant as a baker. After the restaurant was sold Mina and a friend went to work in a hotel in Portal, North Dakota. Later she met (Albert) Julius Peterson at a church meeting and they were married on July 8, 1909. After their marriage they lived on a farm near Brandon. They had two children Raymond and Evelyn. Julius died October 7, 1918 from pneumonia.
After her husband's death Almina went to work at the Telephone Company in Garfield and later worked at the Alexandria Hotel. On January 8, 1921 she married Fred Foslien. They had two sons, Floyd and Donald. The fFsliens lived in Garfield until they divorced in 1934. Almina and her two sons moved to Minneapolis where she worked at Daytons. Later she ran a rooming house for students near the University of Minnesota Campus.
Almia liked to travel and went on several bus tours around the states and into Canada. She spent several winters in Florida. She also loved to listen to violin and accordion music especially good old Norwegian songs.
After breaking her hip in 1976 she lived at Trevilla Nursing Home in New Brighton for eleven years before moving to the Knute Nelson memorial Home in October 1987. She celebrated her 100th birthday in 1990 with an open house at the home.
Almina died at the Knute Nelson Memorial Home on January 18, 1992. She is survived by one daughter, Evelyn Mattson of Coon Rapids; three sons: Raymond Peterson of Watertown, South Dakota; Floyd Foslien of St. Paul; Donald Foslien of Seal Beach, California; eighteen grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren.
Private Memorial Service was held January 24, 1992 at East Moe Lutheran Church with Rev. Diane Lundgren officiating. Interment was at White Garden Cemetery, La Grande Township. Services directed by Petermeier's Alexandria Funeral Home.
