Doris Katherine (Ritter) Atkins passed away at 1:20 a.m. on August 22, 2011 in Lake Station. She was born on December 26, 1924 in Rensselaer, IN to Edward and Pauline (Gilbranson) Ritter and was a graduate of Rensselaer High School in 1942 and Beauty School in Gary.
Mrs. Atkins was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Gary. On October 10, 1949, Doris married J. R. Atkins who died March 10, 1963. She was a loving mother of four children: Harry (Teresa) Shawver of New Mexico, Nancy Cornett of Merrillville, Steve (Dawn) Atkins of Colorado, and Cindy (Jim) Johnson of Lowell. There are 12 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister, Marcia Fleming of Chesterton; and two brothers: Paul (Janet) Ritter of Rensselaer and Henry (Barbara) Ritter of Connersville; and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her parents; five sisters; and two brothers.
Funeral services for Doris will be held Friday, August 26, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Rees Funeral Home, 600 W. Old Ridge Road, Hobart. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens in Rensselaer. Visitation will be Thursday, August 25, 2011 from 2:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Rees Funeral Home, Hobart Chapel.
