James Douglas Loring was born 29 December 1891 in Princeton, Mille Lacs, Minnesota, United States to George Dana Loring and Augusta Lydia Mudgett Loring. George had been a soldier during the Civil War. He moved to California and was a patient at the U.S. National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Sawtelle in Los Angeles California. Between 1910 and 1920 James Douglas spent at least part of that time in Alaska. He and his wife were living in Seattle by the 1920 census and he was listed as an employment agent for the Alaskan company on subsequent Seattle City Directories.
