Hannah (Jakubowitz) Goldstein, Z"L, age 84 of West Hartford, died Friday (July 13, 2007). She was the beloved wife of the late Sam Goldstein for 54 years.
Born in Lodz, Poland, one of 10 children, she was the daughter of Gershon and Chupa Jakubowitz. At the onset of World War II and as a teenager, she and her family lived within the Lodz Ghetto and were forced into slave labor. She became separated from her family and was deported to Auschwitz Concentration Camp in Poland and again transferred to other concentration camps until being liberated at the end of the war. Hannah met Sam and married him in a displaced person camp in Lampertiam Germany. As refugees, they were transported by the U.S. Navy to Nashville, TN with their six month old daughter, Shuli. After three years they moved to Hartford to be near Hannah's surviving sister, Toby Korduner and family.
Hannah was always devoted to the Agudas Achim Synagogue for 50 years when in Hartford and then in West Hartford and was active in it's Sisterhood. She worked for the Phoenix Mutual Life Insurance Company until retirement. She was an active volunteer for the Hadassah Thrift Shop and enjoyed dancing with the JCC senior dancers. She was a devoted wife mother, grandmother and friend.
She is survived by a daughter, Shuli Graham of West Hartford; two sons, Gary S. Goldstein, an internationally known Israeli artist, and his wife, Anat of Jerusalem, Israel, Michael Goldstein of New York, NY and his former wife, Beverly Rouse Goldstein also of New York, NY. She also leaves five cherished grandchildren, John and Jacob Graham and Katie, Efrat and Dina Goldstein and three nieces, Diane Berry, Raye Cohan, Susan Wasserman and their families.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Fagela Goldstein. Her entire family perished in the Holocaust with the exception of her late sister, Toby Korduner who was married to the late Saul Korduner.
A funeral will be held on Monday, Jul 16, 2007 at 1pm. in the sanctuary of the Agudas Achim Synagogue, 1244 North Main St., West Hartford with Rabbi Shlomo Yaffe and Cantor Moshe Pinchover officiating. Interment will follow at the United Synagogue Cemetery, First Ludmir section in Wethersfield behind the Emanuel Cemetery (Jordan Lane and Berlin Tnpke.)
Shiva will be observed at the home of Shuli Graham. The family expresses a heartfelt appreciation to the staff of the West Hartford Health and Rehab Center where Hannah resided since September 11, 2001 and also to Dr. Mark Izard.
