George enlisted in the Army in Perry County on August 5, 1862, and mustered into Federal service at Harrisburg on August 11 as a Private with Company G, 133rd Pennsylvania Infantry. He was promoted to 2nd sergeant August 21, 1862, and detailed as brigade commissary sergeant to date September 2. He never returned to duty with the regiment but honorably discharged with his Company May 23, 1863 and mustered out at Harrisburg on May 26.
George married Martha Eliza Ege on September 5, 1863, in Altoona, Blair County. He was the father of:
+ Joseph Stockton Roddy (b. June 16,1864)
+ George Black Roddy (b. February 27, 1866)
