John Gillaspy, 85, a life long resident Crothersville, passed away at 4:05 PM on Monday, August 22, 2011 at Meadow View Health and Rehabilitation in Salem.

John was a member of Gideons International, a very active 4 H leader, served on the fair board and a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Crothersville serving in many capacities in the church including serving as a deacon; he enjoyed gardening, pitching horse shoes, running beagle dogs and enjoyed the love of animals.

He worked all of his life as a farmer and served as a director for Production Credit in Scottsburg for several terms. He and his wife Marjorie owned a bakery – Take A Break in Crothersville near the interstate. They used several pastry recipes from Marjorie's parents who had Smitty's Bakery until the mid 1960's. John also drove a school bus for Crothersville Schools and worked at Hardy Lake as a grounds keeper later in life.

Born August 2, 1926 on the family home place in Crothersville, he was the son of Haskel and Etta (Barringer) Gillaspy.

On March 3, 1946, he married Marjorie M. (Smith) Gillaspy who survives him in Seymour.

Other survivors include, three daughters, ten grandchildren, twenty one great grandchildren, and one sister. [names of living survivors removed]

Two brothers, Dale and Harlan Gillaspy, preceded him in death.

Reverends Jon Pearce & Bob Weeks will conduct funeral services at 11:00 AM on Thursday, August 25, 2011 at First Baptist Church in Crothersville with burial to follow at Gorrell Cemetery.
