Harlan was the third child of J. Haskell & Etta (Baringer) Gillaspy.

He served in the 7th Army, 63rd Division during WWII, and was the recipient of The Purple Heart, Victory and European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with three bronze stars, and is a
Honoree in the National World War II Memorial.

Harlan was a member of the Crothersville First Presbyterian Church.
