(Obituary from: Dubuque Telegraph Herald, May 11, 1938 - see note below)
Decorah, Ia., - Special: Funeral services were held at 1 o’clock Tuesday afternoon at the Asse Haugen Home and at 3 o’clock at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church for Gilbert Haugen, 75, who died at the Haugen Home Friday afternoon following a six month illness.
The Rev. Otto E. Schmidt, manager of the home, officiated at the home services and the Rev. Paul Koren was in charge at the church services. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
He was born in Glenwood Township, Winneshiek County, on Oct. 5, 1862, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Endre Haugen, among the early pioneers of that township. He grew up on the home farm and 35 years ago he located in Decorah where he conducted a feed barn for many years.
He never married. Two brothers and one sister survive: Edwin, former Decorah grocer, now a resident of Southwestern Iowa; Knut of Decorah; and Mrs. Louis Skow of Soldier.
(Note: Thanks to Cheryl Locher Moonen for the obit. However, there are several discrepancies that should be noted. The date of the obituary & the day of the week of death and funeral that are given in the obituary, might indicate that the date of death on the stone is incorrect. May 6th was a Friday, May 10th was Tuesday and May 11th would be the obituary. To add to the record-keeping dilemma, the church record for his death indicates May 7th, which would be a Saturday. Please note that the date in the major search fields remains the date that appears on the gravestone, even though it appears to be incorrect.)
