Endre was born on the Igdem farm in Vang, son of Gudbrand Endresen and Marit Andersdatter. He left Norway in 1850 on board the ship Ørnen with the name Endre Gudbrandsen Hemsing. This was the same ship his future wife, Guri Knudsdatter Østrem and her family were on. He married Guri in about 1857 in Iowa and they had six known children. Their family was listed in various records as Gulbransen, Gudbrandsen, Hougen and, finally, Haugen. They lived for many years in Glenwood Township where he was a farmer. Their children were all baptized at the "Little Iowa Norsk Evangelisk Lutherske Menighed" in Winneshiek County, Iowa.
