"Ducked on His 50th Birthday
Mr. Robert Barrett, one of our best known and most substantial farmers, was 50 years old Wednesday. His brothers, nephews, nieces and friends gave him a great surprise in more ways than one. The first was when he came from the corn field at noon and found about twenty-five assembled relatives with a big dinner spread. The last surprise was when he was caught up bodily by his sturdy brothers and nephews who carried him to the water tank and immersed him then and there."(thanks to Robin Riat for this article)

"Robert Barrett, son of Edmund and Matilda Taylor Barrett was born near Sugar Grove, Pennsylvania on June 20, 1850. He went to work on a farm for F.I.Miller at the age of 17. After working for Mr. Miller for two years, he went to the oil fields near Pithole City and Tidioute, Pennsylvania.
After two years in the oil region, he went into the lumber woods where he delivered lumber to the mill. At this same time his brothers, John and Henry, were cutting logs, and Reuben was running the engine at the mill. He was in the benzine business for a while then worked on the county farm. After that he helped operate a three horse tread power threshing machine with Henry McKelvy.
He came to Missouri in 1881, but returned to Sugar Grove in 1884 to stay with his parents who were getting old. He married Margaret Sherrard in 1891 and came to Missouri to live in 1894. He worked for his brother Wesley the first year then he bought an 80 acre farm west of Skidmore. He farmed here for many years. After leaving the farm he bought the River Hill from his brother Wesley and lived there until 1917 when he bought and improved a home in Skidmore, where he lived until his death which occurred on March 3, 1938. He and his wife were buried in the Masonic Cemetery near Skidmore."
