Benjamin was a Brandywine Hundred farmer and member of Joseph Marshall's militia unit. In 1776, at Old Swedes, he married Lydia Larkin, daughter of John Larkin and Esther Shelley. They appear in the Brandywine Hundred census through 1810 and are listed as having four sons and four daughters. It is sometimes incorrectly claimed that Benjamin settled in Louisiana, but in fact he never left Brandywine Hundred.
