Mary was the youngest of seven children of Walter and Minnie Knight. Mary was raised in Fitzgerald, Georgia and she graduated from Fitzgerald High School where she excelled on the basketball team. Mary was married to Daniel McKinzey Vaughn July 4, 1936 and gave birth to her daughter Verlyn in 1937. Mary and Mack divorced, and Mary was employed for a while as a beautician in Lumpkin, Ga.Mary married Robert E. Ritch from Columbus, Ga. July 6, 1940 and they moved to Hapeville, Ga in 1945 where she lived until her death. Her second husband Bob helped raise Verlyn as his own daughter, and Verlyn took his surname Ritch.Mary and Bob had a son, Robert Jr., who was severely mentally handicapped. They tried to raise Little Bob at home, but in 1947 took him to Gracewood State School in Augusta, Ga. Little Bob lived at Gracewood until he moved to a group home in Fayetteville in 2013. Mary worked for the State of Georgia Revenue Department in Atlanta, but quit working to help raise her daughter's children (Pam Caraway, Charles Thomas, & Molly Thomas Moore) after Verlyn was widowed in 1969. Mary died in 1978 at the age of 62 with lung disease after losing her husband two years earlier. Mary's address was 618 N. Gordon Circle, Hapeville, Ga. from 1967-1978. Her previous house at 3779 Union Ave. was acquired by the Atlanta airport.
