Jerome was the fifth of seven children of Walter and Minnie Knight. He was born in Laurens, County, Georgia and the family moved to Fitzgerald, Georgia in the early 1920's.

Jerome lived in Prince George's County, Maryland, when he enlisted in the service on August 24, 1943. He was married to Bonnie Franklin Knight from Clarkesville, Georgia and they had two sons, Richard and Brian. Jerome was killed in action in Italy during World War II.
