Sarah Ann Garrett was born near Browning, Schuyler County, Illinois, October 10, 1847, and died at McCook, Nebraska, Mar 21, 1934, aged 86 years, 5 months and 11 days. She was married October 29, 1868 at Rushville, Illinois to Louis B. Skiles. In the fall of 1877, with her sister,Mrs. Thomas J. Lynch, the families moved to Macon, Nebraska where they took up their residence on the prairie. With their mother at that time were three of the children who now survive her. In 1878 they moved to a homestead near Hildreth, but after the death of her husband and father in 1900 they moved to Franklin, and several years later she moved to McCook, making her home with her daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Scott, until her death. Mrs. Skiles was one of the true pioneers of this state. One who braved the early hardships of the prairies, not alone to make a home for her loved ones, but to help build for future generations this great state to its present morals and living, and even in later years was interested in it progress. And as finally old age crept on and she was more content to pass her duties on to others, she could still look back upon a work that was well done. She is survived by her children; Mrs. Cora Larraway, Franklin, Nebraska, Norman of Wilsonville; Hinman of Hildreth; Bert of Long Beach, Calif; and Mrs. Gertrude Scott of McCook. One son Edgar preceded her in death. Surviving her also is one sister, Mrs. D. W. Baker, Franklin; Two brothers, Thomas Garrett of Franklin and John of McCook; one adopted brother, G. W. of Haxton, Colorado; 24 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. As a girl she united with the Christian Church, but later in life accepted the Mennonite faith and had lived a sincere and earnest christian life. While there is sorrow and grief in her passing there is also a comfort in the thought of the great reward that is her's. Funeral services were held in the Moline church north of Bloomington Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, in charge of Rev. M. P. Zook, in the presence of a large assemblage of relatives and friends. Interment was in the Moline Cemetery.
