"The LaFayette Sun" - December 9, 1931:
The Methodist Women's Missionary Society held the last meeting of the official year Monday afternoon at three o'clock at the residence of Mrs. E. W. Willingham. There was a full attendance of members. The society is a unit in all their activities and consequently much constructive work is accomplished. This meeting was the annual election of officers for the ensuing year. The nominating committee – Mrs. Mattie May, Mrs. R. P. Burton and Mrs. Williangham, submitted the following roster: For president, Mrs. Annie Laurie Battle, vice-president, Mrs. E. W. Willingham, corresponding secretary, Miss Bettie McLemore; recording secretary, Mrs. Rea Schuessler; treasurer, Mrs. C. E. Fuller; superintendent of supplies, Mrs. Mattie May; publicity, Mrs. Lee Griffin; social service chairman, Mrs. Mitchell DeLoach; local chairman, Mrs. S. H. Oliver; local treasurer, Mrs. G. L. Jenkins, Voice agent, Mrs. Joseph Boyd. The Voice is one of the best religious periodicals published. Besides the splendid articles on the history and work of the church the covers for the past year are copies of famous religious paintings in the soft colors used by the old artists. Mrs. R. S. Willingham was nominated mission study chairman. Mrs. Myrtis Jenkins, the retiring president, had requested that her name not be in nomination as she would be unable to serve. Mrs. Jenkins has through several years led and guided most ably as president. Years of hard, strenuous constructive work was put over most successfully by her as leader. The serious illness of her sister, Mrs. Mary Schuessler Dowdell, one of the most beloved W.M.S. members, one of the most beautiful Christian women of the town, has saddened the hearts of all the church members. Mrs. Dowdell was an able president of the society many years. Mrs. R. S. Willingham was re-elected mission study chairman. She is now teaching "Land of Dawn" Korea, the land of dawn, as is well known, is divided between the Methodist and Presbyterian work. The Methodist church is automatic. Indeed the Koreans are so advanced that they can have a woman bishop of the church. Every line of work is intelligently carried out by their own people. Mrs. Willingham was assisted by Mrs. M. W Allen and Mrs. R. S. Williangham. In the social hour tempting refreshments were served.
