U.S. Congressman. He attended Amherst Academy, graduated from Yale College in 1822, studied law, was admitted to the bar and began to practice law in Amherst, Massachusetts, in 1825. He was a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives, (1833-34, 36-37) and Hampshire County Commissioner, (1834-37). In 1840, he was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-sixth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of James C. Alvord, reelected to the Twenty-seventh and Twenty-eighth Congresses, serving until 1845. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law and as the first president of Smith Charities, serving (1860-70).
