Former supervisor R. D. Hundley, dies

Reamey Davis "R.D." Hundley, 93, a longtime Fieldale civic and church leader, former Henry County Supervisor, and Fieldcrest Mills towel innovator, died Monday March 11, (1991) at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.

Hundley lived on Marshall Court in Fieldale.

He was born Nov 24, 1897, in Henry County, a son of the late Joseph Hundley and the late Mary Etta Hopkins Hundley. His wife, Roxie Stegall Hundley, died April 24, 1988.

Hundley worked more than 30 years with Fieldcrest Mills in Fieldale before retiring as a supervisor. While at Fieldcrest, he designed the "Royal Velvet" towel in the 1950s, which was a company success and is still in production.

He was a founding member and first president of the Fieldale YMCA and organized a group called the Fieldale Boosters, a civic group before the Lions Club and Rotarians moved into Fieldale. Hundley would later serve as president of the Fieldale Lions Club.

He served one term on the Henry County Board of Supervisors in the early 1970s, and resigned one of his last community posts as member of the board of the Fieldale Sanitary District at the age of 88.

A longtime member of the Fieldale Baptist Church, he served on the board of deacons of the church. He was an avid golfer, hunter and fisherman.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Lewis (Mable) Fox of Albermarle, NC, Mrs. Malcolm (Frances) Gourley of Dudley, NC, and Mrs. Lee (Virginia) Waldron of Asheville, NC; one sister, Mrs. Bessie Barker of Martinsville; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 AM Wednesday at Fieldale Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard Harrison officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at McKee Funeral Services from 7 to 8:30 PM today and other times at the home. Memorials may be made to Fieldale Baptist Church, P.O. Box 98, Fieldale, VA 24089.
